U.S. Containerboard Production a Mixed Bag in July
Containerboard production in July 2019 decreased 7.8% compared to July 2018 and was down 5.3% ytd. Avg. daily production compared to June 2019 was 2.5% higher. Containerboard operating rate increased from 89.1% in June to 89.9%. While total linerboard rate increased to 88%, it has been below 90% in 5 out of 7 months this year.
 
U.S. Boxboard Production Down in July
Total boxboard monthly production decreased 1% when compared to July 2018. The total boxboard operating rate was 93.8% for July. Total Solid Bleached Boxboard and Liner production decreased 0.9% year to date; Recycled Boxboard production fell 1% year to date; and Unbleached Kraft and Gypsum decreased 0.5% year to date.
 
U.S. Packaging Papers & Specialty Packaging Mostly Down in July
Packaging papers shipments were down 13% from July 2018 and down 4.6% ytd. Bag and sack shipments were down 3.1% ytd; multiwall shipments were down 11.8%; food wrapping shipments were up 4.1%; and converting shipments were down 7.1%. The operating rate for July dropped to 81.6% compared to 86.2% in June. 
 
U.S. P&W Paper Production Down in July
Total printing-writing paper shipments decreased 12% in July compared to July 2018. U.S. purchases of total printing-writing papers declined 7% in July compared to the same month last year. Total printing-writing paper inventory levels decreased 1% from June 2019.

In Memoriam: TAPPI Fellow Stuart David Alexander
We honor Stuart David Alexander who was an outstanding TAPPI Fellow that will be missed.

Stuart graduated from Cornell University with a BS in Chemical Engineering and a Ph.D. in Pulp and Paper Technology from SUNY College of Forestry at Syracuse University.

His career began with Westvaco in 1960 as a technical service engineer. From 1977 to 1998, he was a research section head with Scott Paper Co. Stuart was also known for his commendable volunteer work with TAPPI and PIMA. He was involved with Northeast TAPPI, Lake States TAPPI and Empire State Local Sections. Due his venerable volunteer work, he was the recipient of the 1986 TAPPI Research and Development Division Leadership and Service Award.

Stuart David Alexander was a recognized innovator in his field and a national leader throughout his career.
 
TAPPI Press Inventory Audit Will Delay Order Processing

TAPPI will be performing its fiscal year-end inventory audit starting August 27th. As a result, TAPPI Press orders will not be processed from August 26th through September 2nd. Orders received during this time will be shipped in the order they have been received starting September 3rd. All normal payment processing will resume on September 3rd.
