Large Newspapers Laid Off 27% Of Staffers In 2018
According to the analysis, a smaller share of newspapers had layoffs this year than last, with 32% of those papers taking a hit in 2017 and 27% in 2018. However, many of those large papers, 31%, had more than one round of layoffs last year.
 
World's Largest Education Publisher 'Forces' Change
The decision to phase out printed textbooks is divisive: 39% expect this to negatively impact students. Perhaps surprisingly, students are more likely to see this move as negative (44%) than parents (39%), suggesting we have not yet truly reached a generation ready to go “digital-first."

In the press section the existing roll press was taken out of the second position and installed in the first press position. Now a new NipcoFlex shoe press is being used as the second press. The Voith NipcoFlex package delivered to BillerudKorsnäs is the first one which can achieve lineloads of up to 1,700 kN/m.
 
Catalyst Powell River Mill Extends Curtailment Period
The company had originally announced a curtailment from Saturday, July 20, through to Tuesday, August 6. In a bulletin dated Friday, August 2, Krista Cuddy, GM for the Powell River operation, said she regrets to announce the curtailment of PM 10 and 11 will be extended to Monday, August 12.
 
Rayonier Announces Sale of Matane Pulp Mill to Sappi
The mill, sold for $175 million, produces approximately 270,000 metric tons of high-yield pulp and sells the product globally for use in manufacturing paperboard, packaging, printing, and writing paper. The Matane mill was acquired by the company as part of its acquisition of Tembec Inc. in November of 2017.
 
Stora Enso to Sell Stake in Dawang Paper Mill to Huatai
The joint venture Stora Enso Huatai (Shandong) Paper Company Limited operates the Dawang paper mill at Dongying in Shandong province in China. The mill has an annual production capacity of 140k metric tons of super-calendered (SC) magazine paper and other publication paper grades based on recovered fiber. After this, Stora Enso will not have any paper production in China.

The company is planning to make the investment in either Ohio or Michigan, subject to a number of conditions, including environmental permitting and negotiations currently underway relative to government incentives and labor relations. The machine will have a capacity of approx. 500,000 tpy of coated recycled board.
 
Smurfit Kappa Sees Interest Surge in Paper Packaging for Fresh Produce
The packaging leader, which launched its Better Planet Packaging initiative last year, has been working on a portfolio of products designed to replace less sustainable packaging as many brands come under increasing pressure to become more sustainable. In a recent survey, 75% of consumers indicated a preference for paper-based packaging against less sustainable alternatives.

The original case before the U.S. Dept. of Commerce covered uncoated paper in sheets, largely copy paper. Foreign producers have shifted to flooding the U.S. with essentially the same product but doing so in rolls which are then converted into sheets. This is now having the same devastating impact on domestic producers and workers.

In the Bag-in-Box packaging format, the only point of contact with the product is a thin and resistant flexible bag, which is 50% lighter than tin cans and uses 76% less plastic than HDPE jerrycans of the same size. The bag is surrounded by an outer cardboard box that protects the bag during the transport and handling.

To positively influence paper characteristics like printability, coating and starch are applied to the paper in the coating and sizing section using applicator units. Voith’s new SupremeFilm roll cover works well in the Voith Speed Sizer AT, and is also suitable for challenging applications in film presses produced by other manufacturers.
