The new pulp mill would have various positive impacts on Uruguay. The mill’s location is in the least developed area of the country, potentially providing a major spur for rapid regional development similar to the earlier example of Fray Bentos. New pulp mill site is est. to increase entire national GDP by 2%. It would boost the local economy and fuel the growth of hundreds of small and medium sized companies.

2018 Pressure Sealed Paper & Packaging Consumer Trends Strong
From the largest stadiums and theme parks to worldwide fast food chains, brands should continue to transition away from single-use plastics – cups, straws, bowls and more – as images of recognizable logos floating in oceans and sitting in natural habitats have made the rounds. More than half (56%) of consumers are concerned about the effect these products are having on the environment.

2018 Containerboard Outlook Slightly More Pessimistic
PackTrack is projecting flat to lower prices on average for North America and other regions for 2019 on softer economic growth and over-supply of recycled containerboard. Input costs for secondary fibers are soft and are now projected to remain that way for the next several months.
 
Folding Cartons - PackTrack 2018 Beginning of Year Outlook
Boxboard prices were stable in North America in January but a price increase announcement has been issued for CUK for Q1. Prices for White Lined Chip and FBB moved higher in Europe for January but not as much as expected by boxboard producers. Grey Back Recycled and Coated Ivory Board prices declined slightly in Asia.

ANDRITZ starts up modernized board machine successfully at R.D.M. Arnsberg
In this contract, ANDRITZ was responsible for the new design of feed system for the new headbox, adapting the required dewatering capacity, and for recirculation of the white water. The components supplied by ANDRITZ are set up for a future production speed of 1,000 m/min and enable a significant improvement in the quality of formation.
 
Canfor Temporarily Curtailing Production Capacity in BC
Canfor’s sawmill in Vavenby will be curtailed for six weeks from February 11 to March 22, 2019. In addition, Canfor’s sawmills in Houston and Mackenzie will be curtailed for one week each in Q1.
 
Finch Paper Mill Issue Causes "Rotten Egg Odor"; Repairs Underway
As a result, it is transferring the liquid contents to its wastewater treatment system and solid contents to open-air bunkers. The DEC said the open air bunkers are generating the odor, which Finch Paper said was likely ammonium bisulfite. Removal of the material is estimated to be complete by the end of the day Thursday. Resolute Asks for Help with No Softwood Lumber Trade Agreement in Sight
Resolute says they have $100 million in duty deposits sitting in Washington, and there’s still no agreement on softwood lumber. In their delegation to the finance committee of the legislature earlier this week, the company spokesman noted they had invested $250 million in the province, and they employ more than 4,000 workers.

A Healthy Future for Fruit Industry Residuals
Zelfo Technology and Mirontell were introduced to each other back in 2017 as a result of a BioEconomy Event in Potsdam arranged by the WFBB (Germany based Industry Promotional Agency for Berlin/Brandenburg). Noting that both post harvest and industry related waste is a significant problem for the fruit industry, working with Mirontell seemed a particularly relevant project for Zelfo, which is focused on the development of sustainable materials for industry.

Northern Pulp and Fishers Agree to Injunction Settlement
In Dec. 2018 Northern Pulp applied to the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia for an injunction prohibiting any destructive or distracting interference with the activities of Northern Pulp and its contractors in conducting work on the waters in Pictou Harbour, Caribou Channel and the Northumberland Strait. It was found that Northern Pulp was entitled to the injunction
