The Alma paper mill employs approximately 340 people and has an annual production capacity of 350,000 metric tons of specialty papers across three machines. PM 9 will be permanently closed at the beginning of April, eliminating about 85 jobs and the permanent reduction of some 75,000 metric tons of production capacity.
 
Trees Project Commemorates TAPPI 100th Anniversary
RockTenn, Valmet, and other individual and corporate sponsors donated a total of $10,000 to provide the trees and other materials for the event. The trees represent the 100 years that TAPPI members in the global P&P and allied industries have worked to sustain parks and forests.
 
Biodegradable Coffee Cup Has Seeds in Wall
The cups, which are currently part of a Kickstarter (Brooklyn, N.Y.) campaign, will have seeds embedded in their walls based on their locations. Participating stores will encourage people to plant the cups themselves or to return them to be planted by the company.

The two machines at Cominter Tisú have a combined capacity of around 45,000 metric tpy, and have been idle for more than two years after the former Celulosas de Hernani fell victim to the economic crisis in Spain. Cominter acquired the company in July 2014 for an undisclosed sum.

Japan's Hokuetsu Kishu to Buy Canadian Alpac for $50+ Million
HKP, the fifth-largest papermaker in Japan, will purchase all of Alpac's shares from Mitsubishi Corp. and Oji Holdings, which have roughly 80% and 20% stakes in the Canadian company, as early as this spring. The value of the entire deal is expected to top 6 billion yen ($50 million).
 
Sappi Files Property Tax Abatement Application with Skowhegan Assessors
Sappi North America, Boston, Mass., USA has filed a formal property tax abatement application for the Somerset mill. Sappi filed this request because it believes the assessed value of the mill determined by the Town of Skowhegan, Maine, greatly exceeds its fair market value. A fair valuation is critical to the long-term financial health of paper mills.
 
SCA Inaugurates First Tissue, Personal Care Plant in India
The company has been active in the Indian market since late 2013. The plant, which produces baby diapers and tissue for the Indian market, is located in Pune in the central Indian state of Maharastra. Tissue is sold under the global Tork brand and baby diapers under the Libero brand.
 
WEPA Group Acquires Lucart France SAS Tissue Operations
WEPA International GmbH, Germany, has acquired 100% ownership of Lucart s.p.a.’s (Italy) Lucart France SAS operations. At the beginning of this month, WEPA took over the plant in Troyes and the consumer business related to products it manufactures. The company's name has been changed to WEPA Troyes SAS.

U.S. ITC Votes to Proceed on Uncoated Paper Case
The affirmative vote by the ITC this past Friday means that there is a reasonable indication that imports are injuring or threatening injury to the domestic industry and paper workers' jobs. Therefore, the U.S. will proceed to investigate companies' petitions requesting duties on the unfairly-traded imports of uncoated paper products.

Sappi to Build Nanocellulose Pilot Plant at Brightlands Chemelot Campus, the Netherlands
Sappi's group head of technology explained that "the pilot plant will test the manufacturing of dry re-dispersible Cellulose NanoFibrils (CNF) using the proprietary technology developed by Sappi and Edinburgh Napier University." The pilot plant is expected to be operational within nine months.

Stora Enso Appoints Two New Members to Group Leadership Team
Stora Enso announced its appointment of Gilles van Nieuwenhuyzen as EVP of the Packaging Solutions division and Markus Mannström as CTO to head up the new Group Technology function. They will be members of the Group Leadership Team effective as of March 16.
