The Thanks and Giving campaign raises millions of dollars to support St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and its mission of finding cures and saving children battling cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Hammermill Paper supported the campaign by producing special reams of paper that featured original artwork on the front, drawn by actual St. Jude patients.
 
TAPPI Board Elections Underway: All Members Encouraged to Vote
The committee nominated Chris Luettgen as chair and Paul R. Durocher as vice chair. To fill the director vacancies, a slate of three candidates has been proposed. The elections will conclude on February 15.

Canfor Sells Taylor Pulp Mill to Canfor Pulp Products
The agreement includes a purchase price, including working capital along with additional consideration to be paid by Canfor Pulp over a three year period, contingent on the financial results of Taylor Pulp over that time at the Canadian facility.
 
DS Smith Starts New Web Inspection System for PM at Kemsley
The TWIN system includes 18 Web Monitoring cameras, a web inspection beam, code marker, code reader, and winder automatic target control (ATC) for use at the U.K. mill.
 
Empresas CMPC Guaiba 2 Pulp Facility Now 88% Complete
Approved in December 2012, the $2.1 billion expansion of the Guaiba pulp mill, located in Chile, will add 1.3 million tons of eucalyptus pulp capacity, bringing CMPC's total hardwood and softwood pulp capacity to 4.1 million metric tpy.
 
Finnpulp Plans New 1.1 Million Metric TPY NBSK Mill
The planned facility in Finland would have a capacity of some 1.1 million metric tpy of softwood pulp, 60,000 metric tpy of tall oil, and 0.8 TWh per year of bio-based electricity for the national grid. This would represent about 1% of Finland's annual electricity consumption.
 
Madison Paper Pursues Unfair Subsidies Claim
In a January 13 letter to members of Maine’s congressional delegation, Madison Paper President Russ Drechsel cited high energy costs and unfair government subsidies provided to a foreign competitor as reasons for the temporary shutdown of the U.S. mill. Drechsel, contacted Saturday night, would not comment on the shutdown’s start (expected to last until February 9), but his letter had said it would begin Saturday.
 
PMP to Supply Second Intelli-Tissue EcoEc Machine for Hebei Xuesong
TM 2 (twin line to TM 1) has a reel trim of 2,850 mm, a design speed of 1,200 m/min, and a capacity of 60 metric tpd (basis weight 12.5-20 gsm). After the TM 2 installation, Hebei Xuesong Paper facility in China will have two machines (right and left hand) in the same building, based on an integrated tissue mill concept.
 
Tembec Turbine Passes Commercial-in-Service Test at Temiscaming
The company was successful in meeting the test on its first attempt at the Canadian facility preparing to produce specialty cellulose. The turbine operated for 100 continuous hours above the required level specified.

The news came quickly during the past week after the Kentucky Economic Development Authority gave preliminary approval of $400,000 in tax incentives if the company purchases new machinery, equipment, and makes upgrades to the U.S. facility.

The Nantes mill in France produces white top testliner made from 100% recycled fiber, with best in class quality and printability in a wide grammage and trim range. The business has approximately 70 employees and a production capacity of some 50,000 metric tpy.

The South Carolina based company is raising prices on uncoated recycled paperboard due to a continued need to relieve inflationary pressure related to a number of items affecting the current markets.
