International Paper Co., Memphis, Tenn., USA, and Brazilian corrugated packaging producer Jari Celulose, Embalagens e Papel S/A, a Grupo Orsa company, have entered into an agreement to form a joint venture that will support IP's strategy of growing its global packaging presence and better serving its global customer base. Jari's industrial packaging assets, including three containerboard mills and four box plants, will be separated from its pulp and forestry businesses and transferred to a newly formed company in which IP will hold a 75% stake. IP's investment in the joint venture will be BRL 952 million.

"This partnership fits well with International Paper's strategy to globally grow our corrugated packaging business in strategic regions of the world," said John Faraci, chairman and CEO. "We are excited about Brazil's growing market and this investment provides us with an attractive position with a strong return on investment."

With an agreement now in place, the companies expect to finalize the transaction early in the first quarter of 2013, subject to various closing conditions and governmental approvals.

IP is a global paper and packaging company with manufacturing operations in North America, Europe, Latin America, Russia, Asia, and North Africa. Its businesses include uncoated papers and industrial and consumer packaging, complemented by xpedx, the company's North American distribution company. IP employs some 70,000 people and is strategically located in more than 24 countries serving customers worldwide. Its net sales for 2011 were $26 billion. Temple-Inland Inc., acquired in February 2012, had 2011 net sales of $4 billion.

Investments by the Canadian forest products industry in individual projects range in value from $500,000 to $360 million, and have an aggregate value of just more than $2.9 billion, according to Industrial Info Resources, Sugar Land, Texas, USA, which is currently tracking more than 65 major forest products capital and maintenance projects across Canada. The wood products manufacturing sector has only 10 projects worth $140 million, while the remaining activity will take place at pulp and paper mill sites.

Projects are scheduled to be completed as early as last month (October) and as late as July 2014. Construction is under way on 12 projects that tally up to $673 million, including a $200 million investment to restart a mill in Alberta.

In contrast, current spending activity in the U.S. shows more than 380 projects that have a combined investment value of more than $5.4 billion.

From a geographical standpoint, British Columbia ranks the highest in terms of project counts and the combined value of expenditures, with 34 projects worth $990 million. Ontario and Quebec round out the top three provinces, with 14 projects and nine projects worth $548 million and $777 million, respectively.

More than half of all planned project activity has a power or energy component tied to it. There are 32 projects that combine for $1.8 billion in expenditures that are designed toward adding new boilers, steam turbines and power plants, or major rebuilds and maintenance to those units. Plans to add new electrical generating units will result in nearly 500 MW of electricity that will be used for plant operations or sold to the national grid.

According to Industrial Info's Online Plant Database, the Pulp Paper & Wood Industry has more than 500 major manufacturing plants in Canada that are listed as operational. Additionally, Industrial Info is tracking more than 917 active projects worth more than $65 billion in the pulp and paper Industry worldwide.

Brazilian pulp and paper exports fell this year due to effects of the international economic crisis. However, despite predictions that the market downturn will continue, the Brazilian pulp and paper industry continues to invest in research and development of new forest-based products and uses that will reduce impacts from future crises in the pulp market.

This was one of the conclusions reached by leaders of the pulp and paper companies during the ABTCP 2012 – 45th Pulp and Paper International Congress & Exhibition recently conducted in Sao Paulo, Brazil, by the ABTCP (Brazilian Technical Pulp and Paper Association), in coordination with Tecnicelpa (Portuguese Association of Technical Pulp and Paper Industries) and Riadicyp (Ibero-American Association for Pulp and Paper Research and Education).

"Brazilian pulp production is expected to drop to 12 million metric tons, and paper to 8 million metric tons in 2012," affirmed Carlos Farinha e Silva, ABTCP counselor and Poyry VP. In this context, according to Elizabeth Carvalhaes, president of Bracelpa (Brazilian Pulp and Paper Association), major producers are already working on opening the range of forest products. "The investment of $22 billion to $24 billion projected by this sector is not dedicated solely to the supply of pulp, but to all uses of wood," she emphasized.

ABTCP President, Lairton Leonardi, noted that the sector is building its vision of the future based on biorefinery studies and their multiple applications. Some goals have already been met, such as lighter and more resistant packaging and the development of a higher quality and more resistant tissue paper. "Today we are facing challenges, but our vision of the future of this sector calls for development and differentiation," he concluded.

More than 6,000 attended the ABTCP 2012, between conference members and expo visitors from Brazil as well as other countries including Finland, the U.S, Argentina, Colombia, Chile, and others, and 140 presentations were given on topics related to the paper and pulp industry. More than 160 companies took part in the expo.

NewPage Corp., Miamisburg, Ohio, USA, this week announced its support of the World Resources Institute (WRI) in releasing new groundbreaking web applications created to help ensure that palm oil production is pursued in a way that avoids deforestation. These two publicly available web tools–the Forest Cover Analyzer and the Suitability Mapper—are the first of their kind, designed to enable companies and governments to implement commitments to sustainable palm oil.

Since 2008, NewPage has supported WRI's Project POTICO, a project designed to divert oil palm development in Indonesia onto low-carbon, already-cleared lands and thereby avoid deforestation. Though NewPage sources fiber for its operations exclusively in North America under rigorous environmental and social criteria, the company believes strongly in supporting initiatives such as Project POTICO that are working to improve forest product procurement practices across the globe.

Project POTICO's Forest Cover Analyzer tool allows users to identify and assess forest conditions in Indonesian Borneo, including the extent of forests, forest cover change, where oil palm and other concessions are located, and the suitability of land for sustainable palm oil development. Given the increased focus many corporations are placing on responsible procurement of forest and agricultural products, the Forest Cover Analyzer is designed to be an extremely valuable tool for corporate buyers, suppliers, and investors looking to avoid risks associated with deforestation concern and to locate plantations not associated with forest clearing.

The second tool, the Suitability Mapper, is an online mapping system designed for use by palm oil producers and spatial planners, allowing them to locate low-carbon degraded lands on Indonesian Borneo that are potentially suitable for sustainable palm oil production.

As Indonesia is one of the world's deforestation hotspots, developing tools that support responsible forest management, commodity production, and investment in this region is crucial. Now that these tools have been piloted and launched for Indonesian Borneo, WRI plans to apply this knowledge to developing similar web-based tools to inspire and enable responsible forest management on a global scale.

"These online systems bring the world another step closer to having its commodities and its forests too," stated Craig Hanson, director of WRI's People & Ecosystems Program. "And our long-term partnership with NewPage, the pioneer supporter of POTICO, helped make it happen."

"NewPage has always been committed to sustainability in its own operations, through responsible fiber sourcing, achievement of third-party certifications, running efficient manufacturing operations, and looking for ways to continually lower the environmental footprint of our products," stated David Bonistall, VP, Environmental, Health and Safety for NewPage. "Since 2008, we have been proud to support WRI's work on global forestry issues, and congratulate them on the release of these groundbreaking forest monitoring tools. These tools will provide the necessary resources to improve sustainable oil palm production, reduce pressure on virgin rainforests, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from forest clearance and conversion."

By providing public access to up-to-date information on forestry activity in Indonesia, Project POTICO's new web tools mark a major step toward improving global forestry conditions.

More information.on Project POTICO, and links to access these two new web applications, are available online.

UPM, Helsinki, Finland, has completed the expansion of its Kymi (Finland) mill's converting department, and reports that the production of coated fine paper sheets has now begun. The new sheeting line was brought back online in late September and the first sheets have already been delivered to customers.

The aim of the new sheeting line is to serve UPM's customers in close-by markets faster, better, and more flexibly than before, and to support the production efficiency of the integrated mill site, UPM notes. The investment, it adds, also has "positive employment effects," with the new sheeting line creating 24 new jobs.

"Our customers value consistent quality, therefore the quality and the interchangeability with UPM Nordland paper mill's products is crucial for Kymi mill's new sheeting production. Also the wrapping is of great importance; it has to protect the paper during handling and transportation," said Matti Laaksonen, production director, UPM Kymi paper mill.

The product portfolio consists of UPM Finesse gloss, premium silk, and silk in 90-150 gsm. The coated UPM Finesse fine paper sheets are designed for various graphic printing purposes, such as magazines, prestigious catalogs, and advertising materials.

UPM Kymi paper mill produces approximately 830,000 metric tons of coated and uncoated fine paper per year. In addition to the coated sheets, the mill's sheet production includes A4 size printer and copy paper. UPM produces the majority of its European coated sheets in Germany at its Nordland mill.

Xiamen Xinyang Paper Corp. has brought its new Metso (Finland)-supplied tissue machine online at its mill in Xiamen City, Fujian Province, China, one week ahead of schedule. Only nine days later, after five days of continuous operation, the machine reached the operating speed of 1,900 m/min.

"We are very satisfied with the new record we have set on the process of commissioning, startup, and speedup," says Chen Qi, chairman of Xinyang Paper.

Stefan Ziegel, Project Manager, Metso, added that "this record fast startup process is the result of very good cooperation and efficient team work between Xiamen Xinyang Paper and Metso's personnel.

Metso's delivery included a complete production line with stock preparation equipment and an Advantage DCT 200 HS tissue machine with an OptiFlo II TIS multi-layer headbox, a Metso yankee cylinder, an Advantage AirCap hood, an Advantage WetDust dust management system, and an Advantage SoftReel reel. The delivery also featured Metso's Advantage ViscoNip pressing technology and BlackBelt shoe press belt. The production line will be optimized to enhance final product quality and save energy.

The delivery also included an extensive automation package with Metso DNA machine, process and integrated drive controls, and a Metso IQ quality control system that has a Metso IQ Scanner and a Metso IQ Fiber sensor.

With a width of 5.6 m and a maximum operating speed of 2,000 m/min, the new production line will produce 60,000 metric tpy of high-quality facial, toilet, and towel grades. The raw material for the new line will be virgin pulp.

Xiamen Xinyang Paper Co., Ltd. was established in 2009 by four state-owned companies based in Fujian Province, China: Xiamen Shun-Cheng Asset Management Co., Xiamen Haicang Investment Group, Nanping Paper Co., and Xiamen Construction & Development Group. The first phase in the company's investment plan is a tissue mill for producing 60,000 metric tpy of facial, toilet, and towel grades.

Containerboard/Packaging
Hamburger Containerboard, Austria, a member of the Prinzhorn Group, reports that it will close its recycled containerboard mill in Frohnleiten, Austria, by the end of April 2013. The company attributed the decision to existing overcapacities in Europe and intensified competition on international paper markets, "which do not allow for a cost-effective production at Frohnleiten."

The Frohnleiten mill runs two paper machines with a total capacity of 170,000 metric tpy of brown recycled containerboard. The first paper machine will stop production November 1. The second machine will remain operative until the definitive closure of the Frohnleiten facility on April 30 of next year. Some 100 employees will be affected by the closure.

"The specific equipment at Frohnleiten, with a total capacity of 170,000 metric tpy, produced on two small paper machines with only 2.5 m working width, is not able to compensate long term cost disadvantages on the market," the company noted in a press release. "Moreover," it added, "the current situation in the business sector does not give reason to expect a turnaround. Overseas markets cannot be supplied cost-effectively because of the euro-/dollar-exchange rate. The same applies to exports to Russia and Turkey."

Sonoco, Hartsville, S.C., USA, reported this week that it is helping Melitta USA move from traditional metal cans to high-performance composite (100% recycled paperboard) cans that deliver better shelf appeal and a reduced environmental footprint. Melitta, which has been roasting premium European-style coffee at its location in Cherry Hill, N.J., for more than 40 years, has converted its 603- and 401-volume coffee cans to Sonoco's lighter weight paperboard composite container.

Sonoco notes that its rigid paperboard containers weigh less than metal cans, making them less expensive to ship, and they perform as well as metal canisters in abuse resistance and shelf life.

"With the new cans, we're offering consumers the same premium product in a package that they can feel good about purchasing—a lighter weight option made from renewable and recyclable materials," said Jeff Bridges, VP, Melitta USA. "Additionally, we were very pleased with the conversion process," he continued. "Over the past two years, Sonoco's team of dedicated quality and technical experts has provided us with the most seamless transition possible."

The can is spiral-wound from 100% recycled paperboard and includes a high-barrier liner that locks out moisture and locks in product aroma and taste. Because there are no ribs on the new can, the smooth surface provides superior graphic bill boarding and shelf appeal.

Howard Coker, VP, Global Rigid Paper and Closures, pointed out that "Sonoco's composite coffee can provides Melitta not only with reliable product protection and superior branding, but also a smaller environmental footprint."

Melitta USA, is part of the privately held Melitta Group of Minden, Germany, and is responsible for the sales and marketing of Melitta coffee filters, coffee, and non electric coffee systems in the USA.

Smurfit Kappa, Ireland, is in the process of enhancing its supply in the Scandinavian corrugated market with the S-flute, a new concept that it says combines excellent printing properties with high strength, low weight, and tangible environmental benefits. The S-flute concept falls more-or-less between the existing corrugated grades B- and E-flute when it comes to strength and quality of printing, the company notes, adding that the new concept offers excellent printing possibilities with significantly less washboard effect than the B-flute, and better strength than the E-flute.

Compared with the B-flute, the S-flute can give an increased fill factor of up to 25%, Smurfit Kappa says. This means more sheets can be fitted on a pallet, saving on transport costs and lowering carbon dioxide emissions. "In short, the S-flute is an innovation that is completely in line with Smurfit Kappa's goal of achieving sustainable development in everything we do," the company points out.

"Our new S-flute concept has many possibilities, especially in retail packaging, and more particularly in shelf-ready packaging. On the shelf, every millimeter counts. Economic storage and excellent, attractive printing are key factors. The new S-flute, combined with our printing expertise, ensures that we meet all of these demands," the company said in a press release this week.

Sonoco, Hartsville, S.C., USA, this week announced that 19 of its Industrial Carriers (North America) facilities successfully diverted more than 95% of landfill waste in 2011. These 19 facilities bring the total number of Sonoco plants to 30. Four of the 19 plants have achieved landfill-free status by sending less than 1% to landfill, while the other 15 have reached 5% or less.

"One of our company-wide sustainability initiatives is to take 10% of our global manufacturing facilities landfill free by 2015," said Harris DeLoach Jr., chairman and CEO. "To see this level of buy-in by one of our divisions is very encouraging, and raises the bar for all company divisions."

James Harrell, VP, Industrial Carriers NA, added that "I am very proud of our group. To achieve this level of landfill diversion, the entire Industrial Carriers division had to coordinate its efforts across the U.S. and Canada. They've been tracking landfill tonnage for more than two years, working to decrease and divert wastes, and the time and work they've put into this is evident in the results."

Sonoco Recycling annually collects some 3 million tons of old corrugated containers, various grades of paper, metals, and plastics. Currently, Sonoco Recycling operates six material recovery facilities (MRFs) and serves nearly 150 communities in which curbside-collected residential and commercial materials are processed.

OpTest Equipment Inc., Hawkesbury, Que., Canada, will launch the fourth generation of its Fiber Quality Analyzer (FQA) in January 2013. More than a decade ago, the first FQA was developed jointly by FP Innovations, the University of British Columbia, and OpTest. Some 160-plus units have been sold worldwide since then.

The new FQA-360 retains all of the advantages of the previous model, OpTest notes. These advantages include a non-plugging flow cell, measurement of fibers as well as shives and vessel elements, and use of circular polarized light for the most precise fiber measurements.

The FQA-360 also has many new features. It is more affordable, significantly faster with greater automation, has an optional six-beaker carousel, an increased fiber length range to 15 mm, and more, OpTest points out.

3M, St. Paul, Minn., USA, reports that it is continuing to introduce tapes "that solve sticky business situations — in particular those posed by recycled corrugate materials." With the expansion of its portfolio of Scotch® Recycled Corrugate Tapes, 3M says it is arming companies with the tape necessary to tackle the wide range of corrugate in the marketplace in a cost effective manner. The expanded line offers options for tape weight, backing strength, and performance.

Designed specifically for use with recycled corrugated boxes (which are more difficult to seal because of shorter, flatter fibers and a less smooth surface area) 3M's family of Scotch Recycled Corrugated Tapes have up to 10 times the tack of conventional box sealing tapes. As a result, the versatile, super-sticky tape will stick to most packaging material in use today, the company notes.

According to 3M, the constant state of flux of packaging materials is due to the rapidly changing environmental standards, which force companies to continually seek new ways to reduce cost and improve their company's environmental footprint.

"Nearly all of the products being shipped today use corrugated board and with upwards of 85% of it being recovered, the majority of boxes contain some recycled content," said Brian Kenady, U.S. marketing manager. "With so much variation, it is important that companies are equipped with sealing tape that doesn't require multiple applications to keep the products secure. It makes sense not only from an environmental footprint perspective but also from the bottom line."

More information about the complete line of 3M Recycled Corrugate Tapes is available online.

In the first quarter of next year, Ahlstrom, Finland, will increase prices globally for its filtration materials. The increase will be between 5% and 10%. Ahlstrom attributes the increase to the "continued high level of raw materials prices, including specialty fibers, chemicals, and energy."

Ahlstrom notes that the level and timing of the increase will depend on the markets served, the raw material content of the product, and existing agreements.

  • Explains the five essential practices exhibited by the best leaders and provides practical ideas on how to make these a reality in your life.

At one time or another, everyone in a position of authority-whether in a multinational corporation or a local volunteer group-wonders what the key to great leadership is.
