Recent work at the University of Bologna shows that microorganisms die much quicker when placed on corrugated surfaces where they get trapped in the paper fibers and die due to a lack of water and nutrients. Conversely, the research showed that microorganisms survive longer on plastic surfaces.

Tolko has said the Canadian mill is no longer financially viable. However, the company did ask if they could forward the offer on to potential buyers for the mill. It now looks certain that the mill must shut down and look to the possibility of re-opening in the future rather than maintaining the mill machinery's ongoing operation.
