Remembering Dale R. Dill

Dale Robert Dill, Ph.D., passed away April 15, 2020. He graduated from Kansas University with a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Chemistry. Dill was a longtime employee of Monsanto, where he was awarded multiple patents in the area of paper chemistry; he became known as “Mr. Size Press” for his important work in that area. He later worked for Ralston Purina as head of R&D technical services for the company’s Protein Technologies International affiliate. He formed his own consultancy in 1994.

Dill joined TAPPI in 1966 and was a frequent conference presenter and committee leader. He was elected to the TAPPI Board of Directors in 1986 and earned the distinction of TAPPI Fellow in 1989. Dill served as TAPPI’s chief elected officer from 1997-1998 and in 2002 he received the Herman L. Joachim Distinguished Service Award. In a profile published that year, Dill said, “If you’re going to be a member of TAPPI, you ought to be active… the biggest value in TAPPI (are) the opportunities to develop a network, and no matter what job you have in the industry, that’s very worthwhile.”
