In Memoriam: TAPPI Fellow Professor Hannu Paulapuro

We honor Professor Hannu and send our sympathy and condolences to his family, colleagues and friends. Professor Hannu passed away in Vantaa, Finland on 8 June 2019.  

Paulapuro was an astounding academic and researcher that contributed numerous internationally published works and his knowledge to the industry. As a professor at Helsinki University of Technology, over 350 Masters of Technology and 50 Licentiates and Doctors of Technology graduated under his supervision. He was also well known for his work as an editor of the international 20 volume book series titled “Papermaking Science and Technology” which is still widely used around the globe.

Professor Hannu Paulapuro’s remarkable achievements landed him many awards during his lifetime.  He became a TAPPI Fellow in 1998 and received the prestigious Johannes Van der Akken Prize in 2000. Most notably of all, he was inducted into the Paper Industry Hall of Fame (PIIHF) in 2012 and was also named as PI’s honorary member in 2014.

Hannu Paulapuro’s life’s work helped to establish Finland as an international leader and respected expert in the forest products field both theoretically and in practice.

Professor Hannu Paulapuro’s vast knowledge and expertise will be immeasurably missed by the industry.
