Caraustar Adds Customized Folding Carton Capabilities with HP Digital Press

Caraustar Industries Inc., Austell, Ga., USA, an integrated producer of 100% recycled paperboard and converted paperboard products, reports that it has installed an HP Indigo 30000 Digital Press at its Pineville, N.C., facility. The company is using the press to digitally produce folding cartons with faster speed to market, variable data for mass customization, and reduced waste and obsolescence.

Founded in 1938, Caraustar has four business lines, including Mill, Industrial Products, Recycling Services, and Consumer Packaging. All of the materials the mills make, including coated and uncoated paperboard as well as specialty paperboard, are used by the other divisions and made into products. The HP Indigo 30000 Digital Press supports the Consumer Packaging business line, Caraustar's fastest growing division, and is increasing the company's production flexibility, running high-quality customized jobs with variable data printing, serialization, unique security features, and mass personalization seamlessly alongside its traditional litho equipment.

"Brands demand high-quality, head-turning packaging with fast turnaround times. The HP Indigo 30000 Digital Press delivers on this need," said Dean Dietrich, VP and GM, Caraustar. "Since installing the HP Indigo 30000 in March, we have secured six new customers as a direct result of this press's quality and unique capabilities, and we are now better equipped to address ever-changing customer demands."

With the new digital press, Caraustar can produce folding cartons, set-up boxes, die-cut boxes, and custom solutions using HP SmartStream Mosaic that were not previously possible. The company has also gained new efficiencies, such as revision control, faster turnarounds, and on-demand printing. In addition, the press enables the company to produce exact quantities that are needed, when they are needed to reduce or eliminate inventory.
