N.C. State Seeks Department Head, Forest Biomaterials

North Carolina State University (NC State), Raleigh, N.C., USA, invites applications and nominations for the position of Department Head of Forest Biomaterials in the College of Natural Resources. The department offers comprehensive undergraduate and graduate programs in Paper Science and Engineering (PSE) and Sustainable Materials and Technology (SMT).

The PSE degree program is co-administered by the College of Engineering and has a dual degree option that allows students to also earn a B.S, degree in chemical and biomolecular engineering. The PSE program is the largest and most successful in the country, while the SMT program is unique and growing rapidly. Overall, the department is positioned to become the predominant research program in biomaterials. The department is home to 20 full-time faculty, 12 active adjunct faculty, 9 staff members, 20 research associates, and 30 graduate and 220+ undergraduate students.

The Department Head will clearly articulate a vision aligned with the strategic plan of the College of Natural Resources and collaborate broadly across the college and university to achieve that vision. Reporting to the dean, the department head oversees academic, administrative, and budgetary matters and is the departmental spokesperson to the college, university administration, external clientele, and outside constituents and stakeholders. The department head also develops partnerships that foster the priorities of the department, college, and university.

Candidates must possess an earned doctorate in paper science and engineering, chemical engineering, wood products, materials science, or a related field and have the experience and qualifications for appointment to the rank of full professor. The successful candidate will possess strong organizational, leadership, and team building skills as well as excellent oral and written communication skills. Inclusiveness and diversity are academic imperatives and thus are university goals. We are particularly interested in candidates who have experience working with faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds, and a demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for students from underrepresented groups.
