The TAPPI Papermaking Additives Committee continues its  quarterly webinar series, ‘Fill your Wet End Chemistry Toolbox to Improve Your Productivity, Stability and Efficiency' with the third installment, Extractives Control on Thursday, September 24 at noon EST. This series was designed to dive deeper into the science & technology of Wet End Chemistry and expand on topics covered in the annual Wet End Chemistry course. In the third installment, Extractives Control, we will discuss how paper machine deposition problems related to natural pitch, stickies and coated broke synthetic binders, significantly affect paper machine efficiency and product quality. The source of the troublesome character of these materials results from their hydrophobic character and inability to fit into the water structure. These materials are collectively known as extractives or hydrophobic contaminants. We will cover hydrophobic contaminants jointly based on the common principle of their impact on paper machine operations – instability in water phase, natural tendency to agglomerate and deposition to surfaces of paper machine equipment.  
 
We will also discuss chemistry and morphology of extractives with special emphasis on natural pitch, factors affecting stability of colloidal fraction of extractives, conditions (shocks) that trigger agglomeration, importance of early agglomeration and undesired interactions between different classes of extractives.
 
Finally, we will discuss designing logical and science-based extractives control program based on combination of fixation and detackification strategies. This will include discussion of how to perform effective fixation without competing agglomeration process, selection of chemical program and dosage points.
 
Presenter Dr. Przemyslaw Pruszynski is one of the foremost experts in wet end chemistry and currently serves as Global Technical Specialist in paper chemistry with Nalco, an Ecolab company. Przem received his MSc and PhD from University of Poznan, Poland in the area of Physical Organic Chemistry where he taught for 12 years. After moving to Canada he continued his research and teaching at Dalhousie University in Halifax, NS and University of Toronto.  The industrial part of his career started at Dow Chemical Research in the Forest Products Group. He joined Nalco in 1992and has spent the last 23 years occupying various technical positions.
 
Przem is the author and coauthor of close to 100 papers and conference contributions. He is also a frequent instructor at PAPTAC and TAPPI professional courses. Przem is a recipient of Jasper Mardon Memorial Prize for contribution to Science and Technology of Papermaking. His areas of expertise include water chemistry, wet-end chemistry, papermaking chemistry, mechanical pulping and bleaching, papermaking and paper properties.
