MWV Introduces Evertain Barrier Packaging

MeadWestvaco Corp., Richmond, Va., USA, has launched Evertain®, a hermetically sealable, airtight paperboard package for foods that require protection from oxygen and moisture. MWV’s technology combines a specially sealed inner seam with barrier coating to preserve freshness and extend shelf life.

Packaging MattersTM is MWV’s annual consumer satisfaction study. This year’s research showed that preserving freshness was the most important attribute for overall product satisfaction, closely followed by "easy to carry" and easy to reclose. The Evertain® family of barrier packaging achieves all three, the company notes.

"Food manufacturers invest so much in perfecting the crunch of a chip or the flavor of an almond," said John Rau, VP of Strategic Marketing, MWV. "Evertain is designed to preserve those textures and flavors from the manufacturer, through the supply chain, all the way to the consumer, delivering an outstanding snacking experience wherever they are."

Evertain comes in four reclosable sizes, including round and non-round varieties with customizable levels of barrier against oxygen and moisture. The Evertain on-the-go snack cup has the added feature of portability. With Americans increasingly eating their snacks on the go, it’s no surprise that they want food packaging that is both portable and easy to reclose. The snack cup is designed to fit in standard car cup holders, a feature that has been shown to lead to increased snacking occasions.

In addition, Evertain offers unique efficiency and sustainability benefits. It is 60% lighter than comparably sized composite and metal cans. The package’s nestability allows eight times as many empty packages to be stored in the same space, reducing warehousing space and the number of trucks needed for transport. And Evertain containers enable direct printing of graphics—eliminating the need for excess labels and packaging.
