KapStone Hosts TAPPI Corbotec Committee
Over 40 members of the TAPPI Corbotec Committee attended the annual summer meeting hosted by KapStone Paper Mill in North Charleston, SC., USA. on June 19-20.
Bruce Hoffman, KapStone Charleston's Vice President of Mill System Operations, kicked off the annual summer meeting by welcoming the group and giving some interesting history of the facility. A TAPPI business review and update followed, including a report on the status of test methods as well as upcoming TAPPI Corrugated webinars, courses and conferences. Judy Lazaro with AIB International addressed the group in regards to "Understanding the GSFI Audit". Her presentation was followed by "blue card" discussions. Blue cards are questions or problems that have been sent in prior to the meeting from plants across the country. The committee members discuss these issues and work through solutions which are sent out as part of the meeting minutes. After lunch, a presentation was given by Ken Atkinson and Steve Gidman from Fortress Technology on "Metal Detection in Paper", and the day concluded with a tour of the Irvin Family Winery and Firefly Bottling Company with a reception hosted by TAPPI at the Grill on the Edge.
Day two began with an overview of the KapStone Mill given by Frank Lowry, Technical Sales Service Manager of KapStone and a member of Corbotec. The group then enjoyed a guided tour. After lunch, two additional presentations were given. Paul Capozzi of Deublin talked to the group about "Steam Joints and Siphons for Corrugating" and Ron Buckhold of KadantJohnson presented "ThermoMax™ Steam and Condensate Control Systems". These presentations were followed by additional blue card Q&A's.
The 2014 summer meeting will be hosted by KadantJohnson in Three Rivers, MI. The Corbotec Committee will also meet in conjunction with CorrExpo in Indianapolis, IN. October 7-9.
