Mondi to Close One Newsprint Machine at Merebank Mill

Mondi reports that its South Africa Division is planning to close a newsprint machine at the company's Merebank mill in South Africa. Mondi did not give an exact date for shutting down the machine.

The company noted in an interim management report that the decision to close one of two newsprint machines at the Merebank mill was due to the "ongoing decline in domestic newsprint demand and reorganization within the publishing sector." The one newsprint machine that will continue to operate has a production capacity of 120,000 metric tpy.

In addition to newsprint produced at Merebank by the Mondi Shanduka Newsprint operation, the mill also produces office paper, including the premium South African brand Mondi Rotatrim.
