Uncoated Paper Market Flat in North America

North American uncoated groundwood paper prices were flat in November, Mark Wilde of Deutsche Bank says. A $40/ton October 1 SC price hike does not appear to have gained much traction, he notes, adding that the real risk is pricing pressure in the coming months.

"The two key issues are anemic demand, and incremental supply from two restarts (Port Hawkesbury, N.S., Canada's 395,000 metric tpy SC-A machine, and Resolute Forest Products' 168,000 metric tpy SC-B at Dolbeau, Que., Canada), amidst a very weak demand environment," Wilde explains.
