Newsprint markets in North America have turned, Wilde says, with 30 lb newsprint rising $30 per metric ton in the East to $530 per metric ton, the fourth consecutive monthly hike. Markets in the West appear to be weaker than in the East, with prices rising $20 per metric ton to $500 per metric ton in December, lagging prices in the East by $30 per metric ton. Canadian producers are hit by the strengthening of the Canadian dollar against the U.S. dollar.
