Smurfit Kappa Launches Bag-in-Box Packaging Solution for Hand Sanitizer

In order to meet COVID-related demand, Smurfit Kappa has extended its Bag-in-Box range to include a hand sanitizer solution.

The company says that its Bag-in-Box packaging is perfectly suited to sanitizer applications due to it being a hygienic, easy-to-use, and flexible solution that is available in a range of sizes and is suitable both for end consumers or as a refill solution.

The films used in the product reportedly have a high oxygen barrier to protect its contents from air and light, so that the hand sanitizer’s physical and chemical properties can remain intact.

Smurfit Kappa also claims that the packaging brings a number of environmental benefits, including the ability to optimize the supply chain and reduced weight and plastic in comparison to other traditional packaging. For instance, the company says that a 5L Bag-in-Box pack uses 54% less plastic compared with a 5L PET bottle.

Depending on their formulae, it may be required that hand sanitizers are provided in UN homologated packaging solutions. The Bag-in-Box range already includes homologated 5L and 10 Bag-in-Box solutions in its portfolio.

Thierry Minaud, CEO of Smurfit Kappa Bag-in-Box, said: “We are extremely proud to have gathered our expertise and means in such a short period of time to successfully answer today’s urgent need for hand sanitizer.

“This demonstrates once again the strength and determination of our company to constantly improve its products and to identify new markets that could benefit from our packaging solutions and technology.”
