The 35th Biennial Congress of the International Paper Historians (IPH) will be held in Washington, DC, September 15 - 18, 2020, with an additional day for an excursion to a paper mill. Co-hosted by The Library of Congress, the National Gallery of Art, and the National Archives and Records Administration, this will be the first time since 1982 that this important gathering has been held in the US.

Titled “Investigating American Collections on Paper,” the meeting will emphasize presentations related to paper used or imported into the Americas. Presentations topics include: the history and economics of the paper industry; the international paper trade; technical studies on papers used by artists, printers, and literary figures; techniques for identifying and recording watermarks in paper; and the assembly and management of databases of watermark images.

The conference organizers are also eager to solicit presentations for sessions that could address, for example:

  • Papermaking in North America from the Revolutionary Period to the present
  • Technical studies of paper used in cultural artifacts, from broadsides to musical scores
  • Artists’ and fine printers’ papers from around the world
  • The Paper trade in the Americas: imported and exported papers
  • New Technologies in paper studies: watermark imaging and databases
  • In addition to talks, the program will include tours of special collections at the hosting

institutions, including manuscripts, maps, music collections, works of art, and rare books. Paper sample collections at the National Gallery and Library of Congress will be featured. Arrangements for optional pre- or post-conference papermaking or paper mill tours are underway.

The event will be open to both IPH members and non-members, with special rates for students and members. For more details and a complete Call for Papers, visit www.paperhistory.org or contact iph2020dc@gmail.com.
