The Alliance for Pulp and Paper Technology Innovation (APPTI) will hold a workshop June 25-26 in Madison, Wisconsin, to identify paperboard and packaging testing and performance opportunities. The event is being held in collaboration with the Forest Products Laboratory, U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture.

"By identifying common problems in testing and performance and defining gaps in knowledge and technique, we plan to lay a foundation for work to address these constraints on board and package performance," said APPTI Executive Director David Turpin. "We invite integrated and non-integrated suppliers, academic researchers, and government agencies to join us in this promising effort."

Companies sponsoring the workshop include International Paper, WestRock, Georgia-Pacific, Domtar, and Nalco.

The APPTI Packaging Testing Team has funded a literature review of Current Testing Methods and Models for Containerboard and Converted Packaging. Dr. John Considine, Dr. Nathan Bechle, and James Bridwell, P.E., at the Forest Products Laboratory are preparing the review. Dr. Considine will lead off the workshop with a summary of their findings and potential opportunities. Other speakers will include Dr. Douglas Coffin, Dr. Roman Popil, and Dr. Mikael Nygårds.

Breakout groups of workshop participants will define the problems and research gaps, and then identify solution pathways to address them.

Register today. Go to APPTI Packaging Workshop to enroll and find lodging details. The cost for the workshop is $100 for an individual registration fee. In addition, companies that are not APPTI members are required to pay company registration fees as follows:

  • $4,500 for integrated paper and board producers and equipment suppliers; this fee also purchases the literature review
  • $500 for non-integrated paper and board suppliers

Fees are waived for government agencies and universities. For further information, please contact David Turpin (David.Turpin@appti.org) or visit the website (www.appti.org).
