Engaging in sustainable business practices to keep forests and the environment strong is critical for the pulp and paper industry to stay competitive. In 2011, the American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) launched a sustainability initiative called Better Practices, Better Planet 2020, one of the most extensive sustainability goals for a U.S. manufacturing industry.

This October, attendees at TAPPI’s 2019 Pulping, Engineering, Environmental, Recycling and Sustainability (PEERS) Conference will have the opportunity to hear how the industry has responded to this initiative as Jerry Schwartz, Senior Director, Energy & Environmental Policy, AF&PA, delivers the State of the Industry presentation.

Attendees will discover how the industry has contributed to sustainability across the value-chain in six key areas: energy efficiency, paper recovery for recycling, greenhouse gas emission reduction, worker safety, sustainable forestry, and water use reduction. Mills will also learn new strategies for reaching their own sustainability goals.

PEERS is being held October 27-30, in St. Louis, MO, and is considered the premier technical event focusing on the latest advances in technology, as well as fundamental process knowledge and control issues mills face each day. Its comprehensive technical program emphasizes new methods and best practices to help mills optimize operations and reach their sustainability goals. With the conference theme, "Gateway to the Future," PEERS offers attendees insight into industry trends and emerging products. Attendees can also participate in peer-to-peer discussions during panel sessions, committee meetings and the popular Hot Topics Breakfasts.

PEERS 2019 is co-located with TAPPI’s International Bioenergy & Bioproducts Conference (IBBC), a global event that brings together scientists, engineers and other professionals interested in leveraging the knowledge and assets in the pulp and paper industry to produce fuel, energy, and chemicals from biomass. It offers attendees the opportunity to learn about the latest advances and technologies in the industry as well as to discuss key issues and share successes.

IBBC’s expert-led, peer-reviewed technical program addresses key topics currently affecting the industry. Top sessions include: Biorefinery Technology; Innovative Bioproducts; and Bringing Nonwoods to Market (part of PEERS).

PEERS and IBBC will also be co-located with the 12thResearch Forum on Recycling. Held every three years, this event provides participants an opportunity to hear the latest in recycling research and engage in peer discussions on technical and operating issues.

Attendees can attend all three events for only one registration fee.

PEERS 2019 registration will be available soon. Get more details at tappipeers.org.
