Hands up for the Hands-On Advanced Papermaking: Formation Course on May 9-10, 2019 and/or the Advanced Papermaking: Additives Course on May 30-31, 2019 held at the prominent University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

TAPPI has partnered with the prominent Wisconsin Institute for Sustainable Technology (WIST) to bring you two exciting courses to further your papermaking knowledge this May, and there is still time to register.

Most people gain a deeper understanding of the training during the hands-on sessions. These interactive activities make it easier to retain knowledge when you are walking through the steps yourself. Both of these courses feature classroom sessions and hands-on training using the university’s Fourdrinier Pilot Paper Machine.

Advanced Hands-On Papermaking: Formation will cover:

  • the relationship between sheet structure and paper qualities
  • why paper making fibers floc
  • manufacturing techniques that minimize fiber floccing
  • the relationship between sheet structure, formation, and paper properties
  • both visual and instrumental measurement of formation
  • the difficulties associated with the correlation of visual formation assessment and the instrument measurement

Advanced Hands-On Papermaking: Additives will cover:

  • the difference between acid and alkaline papermaking
  • the difference between process additives and product improving additives
  • the basics of retention aid functionality
  • the difference between wet and dry strength additives
  • foam control, pitch control and biocides
  • the purpose and use of fillers

"The course had good classroom/hands–on ratios. We got to apply what we learned right away."

— Jack Ingram, Neenah Papers

Time is running out to register and save your seat. Class size is limited to just 16 attendees in order to ensure generous time for questions and discussion during classroom sessions and hands-on opportunity on the paper machine.
