Newly Unlocked Possibilities of Lignin Conversion: A Pulp Industry Breakthrough

Print Print this Article | Send to Colleague

The common byproduct once destined for the recovery boiler system at a mill is now being used for new kinds of end-use consumer products including those not traditionally made from wood to new types of gasoline that may hold extreme promise as superior bio-fuels for use in combustion engines. The promise of this technology may currently be about to transfer from the arena of academic research to being viable enough for the beginnings of commercial R&D, something which could mark the beginning of a great leap forward and perhaps the biggest positive factor to have a transformational effect on the pulping industry.

In this video, originally uploaded this past month (Nov. 2018), Attis CEO Jeff Cosman and members of the innovations team discuss the current inefficiencies in biomass processing and how the Attis is using byproducts from the pulp and paper industry to double biofuel output. Attis increases process efficiency and sustainability through more complete processing for their product use from fiber sources, as its operations can recover 1.3 pounds of high-purity lignin for every pound of cellulosic ethanol made. The concentrated carbon be converted into gasoline or diesel, or used to make plastics and adhesives.

Attis Industries is a U.S.-based company focused on developing businesses in the bioeconomy across the renewable fuels, bio-based plastics, healthcare and communications industries.
