Held in the heart of the Pacific Northwest’s pulp and paper industry, TAPPI’s 2018 International Bioenergy and Bioproducts Conference, September 28 – 31 in Portland, OR showcases the newest technologies using renewable materials from biomass. One of the eight sessions offered in 2018 includes Developing Innovative Bioproducts from Wood.
Of growing concern to Portland’s pulp industry, as well as around the world, are the increasingly stringent environmental requirements for reducing Chemical and Biochemical Oxygen Demand (COD/BOD). One avenue of change has been to turn existing (and future) pulp and paper mills into biorefineries, producing value-added chemicals and polymers from process side and waste streams.

A main benefit of this change? Compared to single-output bioproducts (e.g. ethanol), the cost for raw materials, chemicals and utilities are already part of the production cost of the main mill product – pulp. Valuable by-products from mechanical pulping waste streams get lost in the process steps of modern pulp production and biomass processing mills, including biological effluent treatment systems, evaporation and incineration.

Attendees at IBBC 2018 will have the opportunity to learn about new processes and technologies designed to recover these valuable biopolymer products, and how they can create additional value through new revenue streams and emerging markets.

Review the technical program offerings and see first-hand the added benefit of IBBC’s co-location with the Pulping, Engineering, Environmental, Recycling and Sustainability (PEERS) Conference. Two acclaimed conferences for the price of one offering comprehensive, peer-reviewed techncial information found nowhere else!
