French Company Carbios Joins Sustainable Packaging Coalition

  

Carbios, Clermont-Ferrand, France, a pioneer company in the field of bioplasturgy, has joined the Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC). This international initiative brings together more than 200-member companies, government officials, and academics to make packaging more sustainable. 

Using a lifecycle-based approach, SPC members work together to strengthen and advance the business case for more sustainable packaging and encourage innovation that is good for people and the environment. The foundation of the Sustainable Packaging Coalition's work is based on the principles of collaboration, education, and action. It aims to transform packaging into a system based on sustainable flow of materials and circular economy.

As a member of the SPC, Carbios will be able to network with organizations driving sustainability in packaging in the U.S. and more globally across the entire value chain from brand owners to manufacturers, converters, collectors, and recyclers, developing new strategic partnerships, exchanging information, and benefiting from broad perspectives on international trends and needs.

Jean-Claude Lumaret, CEO of Carbios, said that "partnerships are essential if you want to reach the goal of improving packaging sustainability. Joining the SPC today will give us the opportunity to collaborate with industrial leaders involved in packaging and to whom we can bring a real additional value. Since its creation in 2011, Carbios has developed two industrial bioprocesses dedicated to the biodegradation and the biorecycling of polymers. These breakthrough innovations, which are a worldwide premiere, leverage the highly specific properties of enzymes to optimize the performances and the life cycle of plastic and textile materials. 

Carbios’ economic development model is based on the industrialization and commercialization of its products, enzymes, technologies, and bioprocesses via the concession of licenses, directly or via joint ventures to major industrial players in the sectors that can make use of the company's innovative technologies. For instance, Carbios created in September 2016 the joint-venture Carbiolice, in partnership with Limagrain Céréales Ingrédients and the SPI investment fund run by Bpifrance. This company, controlled by Carbios, will operate the first patented enzymatic biodegradation technology licensed by Carbios by producing enzymated pellets to be used for the production of a new generation of bio-sourced and biodegradable plastics.
