Free Webinar – Reintroduction of Soft X-radiography for Imaging Paper Formation: Part 1 Paperboards
On October 24, the TAPPI Process Control Division will be hosting a webinar, presented by Dr. D. Steven Keller of Miami University on the Reintroduction of Soft X-radiography for Imaging Paper Formation.

Paper Formation, or distribution of material within the fibrous web, is a critical characteristic of paper and paperboards that directly influences product quality and performance. While approximations of formation for printing and writing papers are readily attained by β-radiographic or optical methods, such methods are ineffective for many other paper and paperboard grades that have higher grammage or thickness. This webinar focuses on the use of soft X-radiographic imaging of the in-plane distribution of mass of paperboard packaging that have grammages that preclude the use of optical or 14C imaging methods.  Soft X-radiography is reintroduced for this application, making use of contemporary computational and image analytical resources. The source of advantages and inherent limitations of the method will be detailed in this presentation. Various examples will be shown and suggested applications will be discussed.

About the presenter:
D. Steven Keller is a Professor in the Department of Chemical, Paper and Biomedical Engineering at Miami University in Oxford, OH.  He received his B.S. in Chemistry from Syracuse University in 1980, and his Ph.D in Paper Physics from SUNY-ESF in 1996.

Dr. Keller’s research group specializes in measurement and characterization of structural properties and the mathematical analyses of heterogeneities.  He and his team have developed new methods for mapping thickness of fibrous structures, space-scale spectral analysis of formation for streak analysis, and methods for assessments of the manufacturing processes that contribute to the final material structure. He has co-authored 25 scientific articles and conference papers, five chapters in the Proceedings of the Fundamental Research Symposia, and two book chapters. Dr. Keller has been a member of TAPPI since 1991, serving on the TAPPI Paper Physics Committee.  He was awarded the TAPPI  Process Control Division’s Best Paper Award for his presentation at PaperCon 2016.
