TAPPI Industry Career Center: Tate & Lyle Seeks Applications Development Specialist

This position provides technical service and applications development support to industrial customers. This position will be focused on customer support, troubleshooting ,and problem resolution, applications development, and new product development projects, as well as a technical resource for the Industrial Starch Team. This position requires travel (20% - 30%).
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provides technical service to customers in a wide range of industrial applications and requires an individual who can interface well with sales, customers, and manufacturing teams.
  • Work safely, proactively addressing safety concerns—internally and at customer or toll locations
  • Serve as a starch and applications resource for the industrial team; with background in papermaking.
  • Interface with production and technical/engineering personnel, including maintenance, contractors, toll producers, and suppliers—often working as a partner or consultant
  • Clearly demonstrate the value of working with T&L
  • Work closely with sales team to provide technical information and technical presentations to customers in support of Industrial business objectives
  • Plan, organize, conduct, and support customer trials, lab work, and technical projects to support and fulfill commercial strategies, including summary reports and data analysis; coordinating with customers and field team as needed
  • Plan, organize, conduct, and Support new applications and/or new product development projects to support and fulfill commercial strategies
  • Conduct core research associated with new product development
  • Strategize to grow institutional knowledge in new application fields
  • Provide thorough written documentation of projects and methods/training documents as necessary
  • Travel Required (20 - 30%), mostly North America.
Education and /or Experience Required:
  • B.S. degree or higher in chemistry, chemical or mechanical engineering, paper science/engineering, or related field
  • Strong background, work experience, and knowledge of papermaking, preferably core knowledge in wet end chemistry
  • 5+ years in technical, manufacturing, or engineering roles
  • Strong analytical thought and lab skills
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision yet stay focused and organized
  • Excellent ability to build rapport and develop collaborative working relationships across all levels of internal and external organizations
  • Solid written (technical and general) and verbal communication skills, with the ability to comfortably communicate with all levels of the T&L and customer organizations
  • Capable of managing multiple and challenging assignments concurrently; and to move swiftly and decisively, but collaboratively
  • Solid Excel, Word, and PowerPoint skills required; data analysis skills a plus
  • Ability to travel frequently and on short notice.
