TAPPI Industry Career Center: Jamestown Container Seeks Regional Sales Manager

The primary function of the Jamestown Container Lake Ontario Regional Sales Manager is to help the company attain and drive performance goals through sales growth. Being a great communicator, showing strong account management, and developing the sales team with teammates both within and outside of the department are important factors for success.
 
This position reports to the VP of sales and marketing, will be based out of our Rochester N.Y., location, and will require travel throughout western, central, and upstate New York.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
 
Existing Account Performance
  • Maximize sales within existing accounts by working with the sales team and personally making regular account calls throughout the territory.
  • Develop and execute the region’s annual sales plans.
  • Manage or assist in accounts receivable issues.
  • Manage or assist with customer inventory, including the development of customer warehouse programs or unique service models.
  • Establish sales territories, quotas, goals, and expectations, while coordinating the efforts and focus of the sales and design team.
New Business Development
  • Aggressively pursue new accounts.
  • Develop and maintain current target account lists, and prioritize new account opportunities for both the sales and management teams.
 Leadership
  • Lead, manage, coach and motivate the Regional Sales and Design team, consisting of approximately 15 team members.
  • Continuously evaluate the performance of direct reports, and participate in the recruitment and selection of new Sales team members.
  • Demonstrate a strong emphasis on process and execution discipline, personal accountability and performance, and clear, honest, straightforward communication.
  • Ensure effective interaction with all regional personnel, working closely with other departments throughout the region and company.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS for the position and the criteria that will be used to evaluate your performance: 
  • Successful development and achievement of the region’s annual business plans, including sales, market share, and profit goals.
  • Adhere to and maintain all ISO 9001 procedures and requirements of the sales and design department functions.
  • Personal effectiveness: meeting timelines and productivity requirements (quantity and quality of work).
CHARACTERISTICS, SKILLS, EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND PERFORMANCE HISTORY NEEDED FOR SUCCESS IN THE POSITION:
  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration or other appropriate discipline.
  • Seven-plus years combined prior experience in sales, with a minimum of three years in a management role.
  • Outgoing, energetic, and results oriented personality.
  • Corrugated packaging experience preferred.
  • Overall confidence in one’s abilities and comfortable making new business development calls.
  • Excellent communicator.
  • Smart, analytical, and inquisitive.
  • Strong performance history.
  • Documented history of making improvements in assigned work area/responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated progression in size/breadth scope of responsibilities.
  • Stellar references based on contributions and performance.
Demonstrate proficiency in the following skills:
  • Sales Presentations
  • Oral and written communication
  • Time Management
  • Organization
  • Proficiency with technology (e.g. personal computers/laptops and associated programs –Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.).
  • Analysis and Decision Making: The ability to collect, assess, and interpret relevant information and make sound decisions.
