The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA), Washington, D.C., USA, recognized WestRock Co.,Norcross, Ga., with the 2016 AF&PA Leadership in Sustainability Award for Safety for their Safety First, Safety Always video project. The award was presented at AF&PA’s recent annual meeting in Cary, N.C.

"WestRock’s Safety First, Safety Always video is a straightforward and effective tool that centers on creating actively engaged employees and a safer workplace," said AF&PA President and CEO Donna Harman.

To achieve a higher rate of employee safety engagement, improve safety culture and morale, and reduce injuries and costs, WestRock produced the Safety First, Safety Always video as part of its 2015 safety strategy. The video includes three modules: Speak Up for Safety; Plan for Safety; and Engaged for Safety.

"On behalf of WestRock, I am proud to accept this AF&PA award recognizing a key element of our safety strategy," said WestRock CEO Steve Voorhees. "Our Safety First, Safety Always video helps employees to rally behind key concepts that, if implemented properly, lead to improved safety performance."

Designed to recognize exemplary sustainability programs and initiatives in the paper and wood products manufacturing industry, AF&PA’s annual sustainability awards are given based on the merit of entries received across multiple categories.

Projects that support progress toward the Better Practices, Better Planet 2020 sustainability goals qualify for recognition in the "Leadership" category, which has five subcategories that correspond to the goals: Paper Recovery for Recycling, Energy Efficiency/Greenhouse Gas Reduction, Sustainable Forest Management, Safety, and Water. The "Innovation in Sustainability" award is reserved for projects that merit recognition for their contribution to sustainable business practices, not one of the goals specifically.

AF&PA’s  2016 Sustainability Report showed that the U.S. pulp, paper, packaging, tissue, and wood products manufacturing industry has made significant, measurable progress toward achieving its Better Practices, Better Planet 2020 sustainability goals.
