U.S. P&W Paper Shipments Decrease 6% in June

Total U.S. printing and writing (P&W) paper shipments decreased 6% in June compared with June 2015, according to the AF&PA (Washington, D.C., USA) June 2016 Printing-Writing Paper Report issued this past week. Total P&W paper inventory increased 2% from May levels.

Key data from the June report include: 
  • Uncoated free sheet (UFS) paper shipments decreased 5% compared with June 2015. UFS imports were down 41% year-over-year in May with exports down 17%.
  • June coated free sheet (CFS) paper shipments increased 1% compared with June 2015. Imports of CFS papers decreased 21% in May, with exports down 8% year-over-year.
  • Uncoated mechanical (UM) paper shipments increased slightly in June, up just less than 1% compared with June 2015, the first year-over-year increase in the past 16 months. Imports of UM papers were down 7% in May while exports of UM in May decreased 23% compared with the previous year.
  • Coated mechanical (CM) shipments in June decreased 19% compared with June 2015. Imports of CM increased 6% in May compared with May 2015, with exports down 41%.
