TAPPI’s Process Control Division presents the free webinar "Paper Quality Measurement - Past, Present and Future" on July 20 from 2:00-3:00 p.m. EDT.

About the Webinar:
After a brief visit to the early days of manual judgement of web quality, this webinar will visit the first online sensors – struggling to measure quality by available mechanical or electric means.  With the onset of the "Atomic Age," a revolutionary and accurate online weight measurement arrived in the industry. Then more sensors were added, becoming enhanced in accuracy and performance, and the measurement of new sheet properties came on-board. Online web inspection has added further quality insight. Today, all of these tools have become a necessity for meeting stringent demands for sheet quality and production economy.

About the Presenter:
Åke Hellström graduated from Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden with an M.S. degree in Engineering Physics. In 1969 he went to the U.S. and joined Industrial Nucleonics in Columbus, Ohio, beginning a lifelong service in the science and practicality of online paper quality measurement. He evolved from field systems engineering, to leadership for development and application of new scanners and sensors.

Hellström retired in 2009 after 40 years with ABB. While there, he created several new products in the paper industry as chief engineer for new scanners, and for a number of new sheet quality sheet sensors. He holds 15 U.S. patents in sensor, scanner and automation technology in the paper industry; several new patents are pending in related technologies.
.
Hellstrom is a member of TAPPI and received the TAPPI 2011 Process Control Division Technical Award and the TAPPI 2015 Process Control Division Best Paper Award for his presentation "Paper Quality Measurement – Past, Present and Future."
