Constructing the TAPPI Industry Compensation Survey was a lengthy process. We worked in tandem with an external organization to guide the creation of the platform as well as assist in gauging the types of questions to be included. In addition to standard questions regarding financial compensation and insurance benefits, we added queries about the amount of paid time off, the availability of child care options, and the level of job satisfaction.

Current ly, more than 550 participants have completed the survey from all over the world, including Canada, Europe, and the U.S. The collected data provide information that both confirms well-known statistics and offers fresh insight into the industry’s compensation and benefits structure.

The most recent data collected from the survey indicate that personnel who have obtained a Master’s degree are paid more than those wbth lesser degrees, with the average reported base salary variation between those with a master’s degree and those with a Bachelor’s degree presenting more than a $10,000 gap.

The survey also illuminates industry demographics. Most of those surveyed have held positions in the industry for 10 or more years. Furthermore, most survey participants hold either a bachelor’s degree or a Ph.D., and participants are likely to be dissatisfied with their company’s benefits plan.

Although preliminary results obtained from this survey remain inconclusive, they serve as an interesting and useful resource for individuals and HR professionals alike. TAPPI will continue to collect data for the next several months, so participants may log in to generate new reports as the data set grows

Industry professionals may simply take the survey to get access to a full summary of aggregated compensation data at no charge; both TAPPI members and non-members are invited to participate. For a nominal charge, participants can create a personalized report of the compensation data and non-participants may also purchase access to extended filtering capabilities.
