TAPPI Webinar: Off-Odors in Paper and Board

Print Print this Article | Send to Colleague

The free webinar, "Off-Odors in Paper and Board", will discuss various odiferous compounds and operational practices that have been found to contribute to malodors. Examples from mills will be discussed as well as approaches for detection and mitigation. Calls from end-users complaining that your paper stinks are never good news. While pulping malodors have decreased dramatically as pulp mills have reduced emissions, complaints in finished paper and board have increased. Factors like water system closure, chests with long dwell times, certain pulping methods or even reactions between additives can lead to foul aromas in the finished product.
Linda Robertson started her career in the paper industry in 1974 at Weyerhaeuser as a microbiologist/microscopist, moving to Nalco’s Paper R&D group in 1988 and joining Nalco’s Worldwide Technical Support in 1996 as Principal Consultant. After retiring from Nalco in 2006, she started International Microbial Associates, which provides companies assistance with new product development, problem solving, audits, bid reviews and training on biocides and microbial contamination. A graduate of Washington State University in Microbiology, Linda has 12 patents and 50 papers and publications related to forest products, pulp, and paper. She has presented papers at TAPPI, PIMA, APPITA and ECOPAPERTECH in North and South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. A member of TAPPI for over 20 years, Linda has served as the Microbiology and Microbial Technology Chairperson and as the U.S. delegate on Dairyman’s ISO methods for microbiological testing of paper.
The Microbiology and Microbial Technology committee is very active and has produced a series of successful webinars on this and other important topics. They will also be at TAPPI’s Papercon Conference being held this year in Cincinnati, Ohio on May 15-18.
