Mondi Considering Containerboard Expansions in Slovakia, Czech Republic

Mondi PLC, South Africa, earlier this week reported that it is assessing ways to boost the efficiency of its operations, including the expansion of facilities in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. The company said one option being considered is a capacity expansion of the Ruzomberok mill in Slovakia. This would involve the installation of a 300,000 metric tpy containerboard machine to produce a new product. The planned project would not impact existing paper machines at the mill.

Also under consideration is expanding the Steti mill in the Czech Republic, through de-bottlenecking and optimizing the current operations, including installing a new recovery boiler. The new recovery boiler would significantly improve the mill’s energy efficiency. The company also is looking at installing a 90,000 metric tpy kraft paper machine to produce glazed paper in an unspecified mill in central Europe.

None of the projects have yet been approved and the final decisions will be made in 2016, according to Mondi.
