TAPPI Industry Career Center: Grain Processing Corp. Seeks Product Chemist

Grain Processing Corp. (GPC), is currently seeking a Product Chemist within the Industrial Technical Service Department for its Muscatine, Iowa, USA, location. This is a full-time role with a complete benefits package reporting to the VP, Industrial Products.

Primary Responsibilities Include:
  • Work in conjunction with other scientists and technologists to assist customers with industrial starch technical issues or questions
  •  Help develop new products and/or applications 
  •  Assist the department with the timely completion of projects
  • Assist with new product development, from conception to commercialization, interacting with Production, Sales, Marketing and Research personnel on new and existing products  
  • Utilize feedback process and make necessary changes to product prototypes as a part of an iterative product development process 
  • Provide technical support for GPC's industrial products and to interface with the Sales/Marketing efforts to increase the corporation's share of market
  • Evaluate performance of starch-based products in various industrial applications and draft technical reports on these investigations.
Education and Experience:
  •  Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Paper Science, Microbiology, Chemical Engineer or other science-based curriculum.  Master of Science a plus.
  •  5 – 10 years’ experience with starch, paper, corrugated box, building products or similar industry
  •  Appropriate level of experience may count toward education requirement
  •  Pilot plant scale experience
  •  Starch or the application of starch in the paper industry preferred
  •  Physical chemical characterization of biopolymers and organic molecules chemistry.
Other Skills and Qualifications:
  •  Understanding of organic, analytical, and/or paper chemistry
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral including presentation skills
  • Strong computer literacy skills with Microsoft Office Suite
  •  Flexibility in dealing with changing priorities and managing multiple projects 
  • Strong interpersonal skills and interact directly and  positively with management, co-workers and customers 
  • Strong analytical skills necessary
  •  Strong sales aptitude highly desirable
  • Able to travel between 25% to 40% of the time.
