For a limited time, nonmembers of TAPPI can download a sample of the high quality research published in TAPPI Journal. The article below was recognized by the TJ Editorial Board as 2014’s Best Research Paper for its innovation, creativity, scientific merit, and clear expression of ideas. The paper describes a deinking process employing cavitation bubbles that act only on a fiber’s surface so that fiber damage is minimized. This is in contrast to traditional devices used for ink detachment and decreasing dirt speckles—dispersers and kneaders—which impose mechanical force on the entire fiber and can ultimately damage paper strength.

Shisei Goto, Hiromichi Tsuji, Isao Onodera, Keigo Watanabe, and Katsumasa Ono. Nonmembers can download this article online.

Primary author Goto and co-authors Watanabe and Ono, are senior research managers for Nippon Paper Industries in Tokyo, where the company’s primary research and development (R&D) facility is located. Co-author Tsuji is assistant section chief at the Iwanuma mill, and Onodera is manager at the Ishinomaki mill. Goto (center in photo) was on hand to receive the TJ Best Research Paper Award from TAPPI President and CEO Larry N. Montague (left in photo) at the PaperCon/NETInc Awards Dinner during TAPPI’s Centennial Celebration on April 22, 2015, in Atlanta, Ga., USA.
