According to a recent report by The Mining Journal, Marquette, Mich., USA, Verso Paper Corp. (Memphis, Tenn., USA) is protesting the property evaluation for its pulp and paper mill in Quinnesec, Mich. Under a petition to the Michigan Tax Tribunal, Verso asked that the taxable value of its Breitung Township property be reduced from the current $48.5 million to $15 million.

"As part of our normal course of doing business, we conduct a review of the taxes we're paying to ensure we're paying our fair share—we are only seeking a fair and equitable valuation of the mill," the company said in a statement issued Thursday by Mark Pontti, public affairs manager at the Quinnesec mill.

"Ideally, the township and company will come to a common understanding of the assessment numbers and find the right solution to property taxes that is fair to both the township and the mill," the statement reads. "At this time, we are committed to continue the dialogue with the township and not in the media, public, or courts."

The company emphasized that Verso is not going anywhere, and will "still contribute jobs, purchased goods/services, wood purchases, and indirect jobs."
