DePuy Synthes’ Organic Cellulosic Nonwoven Replaces Animal Collegen in Neurosurgery

This past month, Johnson & Johnson, New Brunswick, N.J, USA, subsidiary DePuy Synthes CMF began officially marketing the first dural replacement to successfully use cellulose as a stronger and better-sealing replacement for the dural membrane during cerebral reconstructive surgery. 

Clinical trial details were released, demonstrating that the material performed better in studies than various alternate synthetics, offering the full advantages of the current common medicinal practice of grafting animal collagen tissue – a practice that works effectively but still worries doctor’s about potential disease contamination. 

While no significant difference was found as far as infection rates, the organic nonwoven material did display superior strength and seal quality as well as the flexibility associated with human dura matter due to its unique organic construction technique.
