According to an article by Recycling International Magazine, Arnhem, the Netherlands, made available on their website earlier this week, DS Smith (London, U.K.) would like to see the EU be more active assessing some of their current regulations that could possibly hurt the paper and packaging industries.

"The politicians that have responsibility for resource management must have enough power to make it happen", stressed Jim Malone, the new director of recycling at DS Smith. Malone succeeds Peter McGuinness, who becomes director of sustainability for the group.

Malone is to "lead the Recycling Division in the next phase of development, growing the company through a mixture of organic growth and acquisition," said CEO Miles Roberts. Malone was European sales and purchasing director of recycling at DS Smith and has worked at the company for 20 years. In his new role, he plans to continue championing the resource management industry, particularly since "clear political leadership is still lacking to support future development of the sector."

According to Malone, "we are at a time when we need to assess many aspects of how regulations are working." He is curious when the EU emerges with new plans on the circular economy. "We need to be agreeing on the best way forward now rather than letting things slip month after month," he argued.

DS Smith is a provider of corrugated and plastic packaging supported by paper and recycling operations in 25 countries. They employ 21,500 people.
