According to a recent Smurfit Kappa (Dublin, Ireland) release that reported on strategy as part of an overall performance evaluation, the company might close four of its corrugated plants and a containerboard mill in Europe. The release did not give locations of these facilities.

The release noted that "as part of its ongoing focus on controlling operating costs and improving operational efficiency, the Group has commenced a process of engagement with its works councils and trade unions regarding the rationalization or closure of four corrugated facilities and a recycled containerboard mill in Europe..."

The group also reported that it plans to concentrate more on South America and will focus on regions such as Columbia and the Dominican Republic.
