RockTenn Awarding Contract for BFB Boiler at P&P Mill in Alabama

RockTenn Co., Norcross, Ga., USA, will soon award a contract to install and erect a new bubbling fluidized-bed biomass (BFB) boiler at its pulp and paper mill in Demopolis, Ala. The investment is valuated at around $US70 million.

The new fluidized bed biomass boiler at the bleached paperboard mill will replace two 1950s power boilers. The fluidized bed biomass boiler project is expected to be completed by January 2016, and once implemented, is expected to achieve an attractive return while addressing Boiler MACT requirements at the mill.

RockTenn produces bleached paperboard and market pulp at its Demopolis, Ala., mill and believes it is one of the lowest cost solid bleached sulfate paperboard mills in North America, largely because of cost advantages achieved through original design and efficient process flow.

RockTenn will also invest approximately $46 million to upgrade the Stevenson, Ala., pulp mill. When completed, the company expects to generate after-tax returns in excess of 25% through reduced fiber and chemical usage and lower maintenance expenses, offset by slightly higher energy usage.
