UPM, Helsinki, Finland, reports that it is proceeding as planned with its EUR 160 million investment to increase pulp production at its Kymi mill in Kouvola, Finland. The company has signed agreements within the KYMI-700 project concerning the planning, new debarking plant, and pulp drying machine as well as modernization of the softwood fiber line. The parties have agreed not to disclose the value or further details of the agreements. The project will be completed in the final quarter of 2015.

The planning of the KYMI-700 project has been commissioned from the local engineering office CTS Engtec Oy. Raumaster from the Finnish city of Rauma will supply the new debarking plant. The complementary pulp drying machine and modernization of the fiber line will be supplied by the Austrian company Andritz. Supply of the rest of the equipment and systems will proceed according to the plan.

With this investment, UPM Kymi mill’s annual pulp production capacity will increase by 170,000 metric tons, up to 700,000 metric tpy of bleached northern softwood and birch pulp. The investment forms a significant part of UPM’s target to reach a 10% increase in its 3.3 million metric tpy pulp capacity over the next three years.

UPM Kymi is an integrated mill producing pulp, paper, and energy. Its products include bleached softwood and hardwood kraft pulp as well as coated and uncoated fine paper. The mill employs about 600 people and is located in South East Finland in Kouvola.

UPM Pulp is one of the world’s leading producers of northern softwood, birch, and eucalyptus pulp, supplying global customers mainly in the growing end use segments such as tissue, specialty papers, and board through its own sales and technical service network. UPM Pulp operates four pulp mills, three in Finland and one in Uruguay, as well as eucalyptus plantations in Uruguay, employing approximately 1,500 people.
