SP Fiber Technologies, LLC (SPFT) says that it will convert a newsprint machine at its Newberg, Ore., USA, paper mill to lightweight packaging products. PM 5 ceased production of newsprint on January 15 to allow for necessary process modifications. The conversion is expected to be completed in the second quarter of this year.

SPFT notes that it will continue providing high quality, recycled content newsprint for the west coast market from PM 6.

"This project reflects the strategy to grow our packaging business while remaining a preferred newsprint supplier in the West. Newberg is a solid asset with great people. We are very excited about this expansion of our packaging business in the West." said Allen Byrd, CEO.

SPFT is a sustainability oriented producer of 100% recycled packaging and high recycled content newsprint. The company operates mills in Dublin, Ga., and Newberg, as well as a national recycled material collection business, SPRC.

SPFT provides ultra-lightweight containerboard for new and traditional packaging applications. All products are FSC, SFI, and PEFC certified.
