RockTenn will roll out the TAPPISAFE Safety Orientation Program at it's West Point, Va., mill. TAPPISAFE, a service of TAPPI offered in partnership with Alliance Safety Council, provides a standardized safety orientation program for contractors and is the only safety orientation program specifically designed for the industry, by the industry.

"The TAPPISAFE program provides RockTenn's West Point mill with a proven safety orientation system that will ensure all contractors working on our site have the same safety orientation," said John Spangler, safety manager. "The comprehensive program provides an easy means of tracking and verifying that each contractor has received the same safety orientation. And TAPPISAFE includes both a common, basic safety orientation session as well as a session on topics specific to our facility, which is a key in a large, complex facility such as West Point."

Larry N. Montague, TAPPI President and CEO, added that "TAPPI is very pleased to announce that RockTenn has chosen to utilize the TAPPISAFE program at its West Point manufacturing facility. Safety is of utmost importance to our industry and the TAPPISAFE program ensures that a standard level of safety awareness has been reached before any contractor goes to a jobsite or mill. RockTenn's adoption of the program at this facility further demonstrates how the industry has embraced use of the TAPPISAFE program."

The TAPPISAFE program provides a solid foundation in safety by addressing OSHA required awareness level safety orientation for any supplier or contractors that works in a pulp, paper, or packaging facility. Key aspects of the program include standardized courses that help reduce redundant and potentially costly safety orientations, up-to-date OSHA compliance information, and instantly verifiable records.

RockTenn is one of North America's leading producers of corrugated and consumer packaging and recycling solutions. Based in Norcross, Ga., USA, RockTenn employs approximately 26,000 people and operates more than 240 facilities in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Chile, Argentina, and China. The West Point mill produces nearly 900,000 tons of linerboard and corrugating medium.

TAPPISAFE Programs also include PSM (process safety management), truck driver orientation, and employee orientation.

The Alliance Safety Council has more than 20 years of proven success in developing, delivering, and maintaining contractor safety orientations and has administered more than 1.2 million training units nationwide.
