U.S. P&W Paper Shipments Decline

Total U.S. printing and writing (P&W) paper shipments decreased 2% in January 2011 compared with January 2010, according to the AF&PA January 2011 Printing-Writing Paper Report released yesterday. Two of the four major P&W paper grades posted increases compared with last January. U.S. purchases (shipments + imports – exports) of P&W papers also decreased, down 4% in January. Total P&W paper inventory levels increased 4% compared with December 2010.

Some additional key findings include:

  • Uncoated free sheet (UFS) inventory increased vs last month for the fourth consecutive month
  • Coated free sheet (CFS) shipments increased year-over-year for the 15th consecutive month
  • Coated mechanical (CM) shipments increased year-over-year for the first time in four months
  • Uncoated mechanical (UM) inventory increased vs last month, in the double digits.
