Katahdin Paper Co., South Portland, Maine, USA, this week launched a new specialty publishing grade, Baxter Book, targeted for trade book and educational workbook applications. The new product is engineered with 40% on-site processed recycled fiber, high opacity, and "consistent pressroom run-ability." It is manufactured at the company's integrated operations in East Millinocket, Maine, which are energy self-sufficient and source all major raw materials from the U.S. The mill generates nearly 100% of its energy through an on-site biomass boiler and hydroelectricity. Baxter Book is available in brightness levels of 60, 65, and 70, basis weights of 33 and 35 lb, a choice of shade (white or cream), and FSC certification upon request. The new product joins the family of lightweight uncoated groundwood papers that includes Baxter Brite, an ultra-lightweight publishing paper, and Baxter Lite, a specialized directory paper. Katahdin is owned by Brookfield Asset Management and operated by Fraser Papers under a management agreement.
