Unbleached kraft board list prices in January remained flat, at $825 - $885/ton. MWV and G-P recently announced a $40/ton price hike on its CUK (coated unbleached kraft) grades. However, it remains uncertain if the price increase will go through, Wilde says. The price hike is driven by an improvement in demand and a rise in input costs. Downstream, as announced in an earlier edition of Over the Wire, Graphic Packaging plans to close its Fort Wayne, Ind., and Santa Clara, Calif., folding carton plants by mid-2010. This is in addition to the closure of four plants in February. Demand from the beverage carrier side of the market (for beer) appears strong in the U.S. as consumers opt to drink at home, Wilde explains.
