AMC NEWS
AMC has undergone some changes in the past few months to make it more efficient at serving members. In early June, Nanos Research sent surveys to all members asking for their input on AMC, our services and programs. Thank you for your input and feedback as it will help make AMC more valuable to members.

With the new president came a restructuring of AMC’s roles and responsibilities. Some of these changes resulted in team members leaving and we wish them well in their endeavours. Please join us welcoming the newest team members:

• Manager, Marketing and Communications: Shannon Bachorick joins AMC with over 10 years’ experience managing and operating her own business in communications. Shannon is responsible for developing a communications strategy and annual plan for our key marketing tools including our electronic newsletter, bi-annual magazine and events planning. If you have news releases or items that should be shared with other members, please send them to shannon@a-m-c.ca.

• Executive Assistant: Judy Ahlsten joins AMC with over 20 years of administrative experience to executives in the financial industry. Judy’s mandate is to support the president and board of directors while also ensuring we are serving members well.

Donnie remains our trusted financial advisor and continues to support the services and programs offered to members.

As part of the restructuring, all staff members are able to help members with questions about our programs and services.

The AMC office in Regina has also undergone a few cosmetic changes with fresh new paint and artwork on display by Saskatchewan artist Jo Ann Fahlman. We received many compliments on our new look during the AMC open house at the start of Canada’s Farm Progress Show. We also now have a dedicated office with a desk and a window for members who would like to have a space to work in Regina. The office includes a private phone line and Wi-Fi. We also have a small conference room that accommodates up to eight people. As always, we are happy to offer coffee, tea or water to AMC members while in Regina. Please contact us if you wish to reserve this space.

We need your input!

We would like your input on the date of AMC’s Annual Golf Classic. In the past, it was held on the Monday of CFPS week. This year, we held it on the Tuesday. We want to know what our members prefer for next year. Would you rather our golf tournament be held on Monday, June 13 or Tuesday, June 14, 2016? As well, please send any other feedback concerning the golf tournament to Shannon Bachorick. Thank you for your response!

AMC hosted and participated in a number of events during the 2015 CFPS. The 23rd annual AMC Golf Classic took place on Tuesday at the Murray Golf Club in Regina. We had beautiful weather for the tournament, which made the day that much more enjoyable. The list of winners and pictures from the event can be found on the AMC Golf Classic page.

On Wednesday, we partnered with HSBC to host the keynote presentation "Growth Through Export Markets." Gary Anderson, CEO of Ag Growth International, provided an overview of AGI’s experience expanding into export markets. Andrew Skinner, Head of Global Trade and Receivables Finance at HSBC Canada, also spoke about HSBC’s experience in our industry and the tools it can provide as you contemplate expansion. This was a great forum for AMC members to network and speak with business leaders in our industry.

In addition to the above-mentioned events, AMC partnered with Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters (CME) and Saskatchewan Trade and Export Program (STEP) to host an executive roundtable with the Honourable Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade, on Friday. The roundtable provided a great opportunity to discuss key industry issues. If you wish to be involved in such events in the future, please contact our office.

INDUSTRY NEWS
Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced that Canada and Ukraine have successfully concluded negotiations toward the Canada-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement (CUFTA). The bilateral free trade agreement will boost commercial ties between the two countries, creating jobs and opportunities for Canadians across Canada. The announcement was made just a few weeks after the Prime Minister’s visit to Ukraine in early June, his third to the country since March 2014.

The CUFTA will provide improved market access for Canadian exports to the Ukrainian market, help address non-tariff barriers and facilitate closer economic relations. In addition, the CUFTA will provide Ukrainian exports with improved access to the Canadian market, which is consistent with the Government’s unwavering commitment to support Ukraine’s democratic transition and economic reforms.

Once the Agreement enters into force, Canada and Ukraine will immediately eliminate duties on 99.9 per cent and 86 per cent of respective current imports, thereby benefiting both Canadian and Ukrainian exporters and consumers. The Agreement will result in the elimination of all Ukrainian tariffs on industrial goods, forestry and wood products, fish and seafood products, as well as the elimination of the vast majority of Ukraine’s agricultural tariffs. Canadian agriculture exporters will benefit from duty-free access for beef, pulses, grains, canola oil, processed foods and animal feed. Canadian pork producers will benefit from improved access to Ukraine’s market via a large tariff rate quota.

Prime Minister Harper highlighted the inclusion of Ukraine as a priority emerging market under Canada’s Global Markets Action Plan and as one of Canada’s development countries of focus. He also publicly released Canada’s market access plan for Ukraine – another tool the Government of Canada is providing to help Canadian companies, especially small and medium-sized enterprises, identify new opportunities to do business in Ukraine.

The Agreement is informed by public consultations, and reflects the views and priorities of Canadian businesses, industry associations, provinces and territories, and other stakeholders.

Quick Facts

• Since 2006, the Government of Canada has concluded free trade agreements with 39 countries, bringing the total to 44.
• Total bilateral merchandise trade between Canada and Ukraine averaged $347 million in 2011-2013, and is expected to expand by 19 per cent as a result of the implementation of this trade agreement.
• Canada’s gross domestic product (GDP) would increase by $29.2 million under this trade agreement; similarly, Ukraine’s GDP would expand by $18.6 million.
• Canada’s exports to Ukraine would increase by $41.2 million. Canada’s export gains would be broad-based with exports of pork, machinery and equipment, transport equipment, other manufactured products, motor vehicles and parts, as well as chemical products leading the way.
• With the conclusion of the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement and the coming into force of the Canada-Korea Free Trade Agreement on January 1, 2015, Canadian exporters will soon benefit from preferential access to more than half of the global marketplace.

Quote

"Our Government has shown an unwavering commitment to ensuring the stability and security of Ukraine. Today’s conclusion of the Canada-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement is another milestone in the important relationship between our two countries. We remain committed to creating the best conditions for Canadian companies to succeed abroad, as well as to ensure jobs and opportunities across our country." – Prime Minister Stephen Harper

The standard is being revised to add a larger packaging size category for large square baler twine to provide an alternative for greater twine-carrying capability and re-wording of the description for knotters on a large square baler.

The committee would like additional input from twine producers, large square baler manufacturers, and users of agricultural baler twine. Anyone interested in providing input on this revision is asked to contact Scott Cedarquist, cedarq@asabe.org.
