CDAO Presentation on Construction Lien Act

Panelist speakers included Glenn Ackerley, partner with the law firm WeirFoulds LLP; Geza Banfai, Counsel with McMillan LLP; Edward G. Betts, current Head of the Gowling WLG Infrastructure and Construction Sector Group; Eric Hoffstein, partner with Minden Gross LLP; Steve Ness, President of the Surety Association of Canada; Jerry Paglia, Director of Procurement for the Regional Municipality of York; Paul Raboud, active director at Bird Construction, member of the Board of Directors of Stephenson Holdings Inc., and Chair of OGCA; and Chris Stanek, partner at Gowling WLG.

The topics discussed covered areas such as understanding Bill 142, which was presented by Edward Betts. Steve Ness went on to discuss bonds, followed by Chris Stanek who explained prompt payment and adjudication. All panelists weighed in and provided detailed explanations of how the Construction Lien Act will affect our members and partners in the construction and trades industry.

During the question and answer portion, countless audience members asked the panel how Bill 142 will impact how they do business. It was evident that attendees were concerned, however panelists expertly explained that when looking at the big picture, the new legislation will ultimately benefit the industry and it deserves our full support.
