The week kicked off with a Walsh Canada breakfast that addressed 150 workers and stakeholders at Etobicoke General Hospital. Workers listened to speeches from a variety of speakers including Craig Lesurf. A warm breakfast was served and everyone was given the opportunity to pose for photos with the oversized Safety Week Polaroid frame.

At the Toronto Congress Centre, the 2018 Skills Ontario Competition and Career Exploration Showcase brought out some of the province’s best and brightest young minds. Over 1,900 students strived to win medals in 67 diverse contest areas. The League of Champions jersey was proudly on display at our booth and students had the opportunity to sign it as a pledge to promote health and safety amongst their peers. The day ended with a CFB Borden event.

May 8 was filled with back-to-back events which started at the Toronto Congress Centre for the Skills Ontario breakfast. Next up was a visit to the Humber Wastewater Treatment Plant. We had the opportunity to meet with Robert Love, the Occupational Health and Safety Manager of Alberici Constructors, Ltd. and to sit in on an educational session given by an OPP officer who discussed impairment and how to recognize the signs, particularly in relation to cannabis.

That was followed by a Walsh and Kenaidan Contracting Ltd. barbeque at the Ashbridges Bay Wastewater Treatment Plant. The barbeque was held in partnership with IO, MySafeWork and the League of Champions. Rob Ellis addressed a crowd of over 200 workers from mixed trades and municipalities while feasting on a delicious spread of various barbeque dishes and sides.

May 9 took us over to the Niagara area where the Niagara Construction Association held its third annual Safety Awareness Day and Tradeshow. The OGCA set up an information booth where attendees could sign a League of Champions jersey as well as enter to win a prize pack which included League of Champions stickers, flashlights, multi-use tools and a signed copy of Safe by Accident? by Judy Agnew and Aubrey Daniels. CPO Ron Kelusky presented the NCA with its very own charter and League of Champions jersey as he addressed members from Niagara Region.

EllisDon, in partnership with IO, also hosted a safety awareness session at Mount Sinai Toronto Hospital where they discussed the Safety Pass, how to become accredited, its importance and convenience.
Safety Week wrapped up on May 11 with a Safety Barbeque hosted by Bird Construction where team leaders, senior management, employees and workers recognized and celebrated safety.

Safety Week is a time to convene, connect and discuss the importance of safety in industries both diverse and much like our own. It serves as a reminder of the standard we need to consistently uphold. It was a tremendous success and we look forward to seeing you again next year!
